Nutrition & Dietetics

Often a child with special needs may face specific barriers to having a healthy relationship with food. A child with autism spectrum disorder may have an intensely negative reaction to particular textures, tastes or colors. Children with Cerebral Palsy, meanwhile, may prefer softer foods because of difficulties encountered when chewing or swallowing. Children with limited mobility or those who have conditions like Down Syndrome can have low muscle tone thereby making it harder keep their weight down. The medications taken by these may in turn affect their weight and be a cause for certain deficiencies. It is hence vital to establish good eating habits in these children.

At the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics, all these issues are approached on a step-by- step basis. Children/adults undergo a nutrition assessment and are then suggested individualized menu plans based on their food preferences and nutritional requirements. To promote healthy eating habits, children and families are encouraged to take up kitchen gardening and cook healthy recipes. Community based nutrition education programs and workshops are also conducted by the department.
